Movin' Back into the Dorm

Hey everyone! 

Phil here. I'm just writing a quick note because I haven't been able to the past week. I just moved into my dorm here in McCarthy at Loyola Marymou

nt University. The school year looks like its going to be pretty busy. But I'm hoping that I'll be able to find some spare time to write some blogs and do some BT Podcasts. 

So as a normal college student, I enjoy my free time spent in

 the confines of my dorm room. So to make my time spent there more special, I love to decorate it with posters, bobbleheads, and miscellaneous items. Along with my Star Wars, Orangina, Jaws, Ben Harper, and Bob Dylan posters, I actually made a poster out of a picture that my friend Joey Mota took.

Yep, a pretty sweet picture of K-Rod with his domineering walk into the stadium. Good Job Joey! You have been a good friend for the past few years that I've known you!

Aside from that, life is good. More baseball analysis on its way!

Episode 145 August 19

Hey guys whats up! We just finished editing our newest episode of BT. It is our 145th and last video before the start of school! It's an action packed episode with a new format. We start out with a news-based headline section and then go into a discussion panel with Christian and I like we usually do. We discuss the 2008 Olympics highlighting Michael Phelps and the Usain Bolt, talk about the Tampa Bay Rays chances and of course, we do a little Angel Talk!

Back From San Diego

Hey everyone! I'm back. Just got back to the excellent San Dimas yesterday after 7 days in San Diego where I surfed, Shamued and saw the Padres get walloped by the Brew Crew.

at 7-1 in another game that proves that the Padres shouldn't have been my pick to win the wild card of the National League this year. I feel bad for Bud Black who can't really do anything with a team that doesn't really hit that well, has spotty 

pitching other than Peavy, and leaves 11 runners on base while scoring 1 run.

Shout-out to Sam Thomas who I got to see 2 days in a row! Randomly, we met up at the Padres game and then the next day he came and v

isited where I was staying and we played some shuffleboard, did some body surfing, and barbecued some mean sausages.

So I've been outside the sports loop aside from Phelps and the Gymnasts of the USA. Pretty freakin' amazing about the 8 gold medals! 

But I gotta get back in baseball action so 

I can do another podcast. Hopefully I can get Christian over hear to do one last episode before the start of school!

Hey! Phil here, Just did a new BT. I wanted to get one in before I go down to San Diego for a week. I chat about the Olympics, including the opening ceremony, baseball USA, Angel Talk, and much more! Enjoy!

Dynasty Dethroned

Has the time come? Have the "great" New York Yankees been dethroned from their dynasty? Well over half way into the 2008 season, it certainly seems as though this dream come true has come. Sitting in third place on August 8 doesn't seem right for Yankee fans across America. The pinstriped players of New York come to Los Angeles where they will play the Angels in a three game series this weekend.  If the Angels can manage at least 2 wins (which is highly likely, seeing how the Angels have been playing), the Yankees could go home as far back as 8.5 games behind the up and coming Rays. Meanwhile, the Red Sox are still in the mix in second place. But back to the dynasty. The Yankees haven't bee in the world series since 2003. They haven't won a World Series since 2000. This is the longest break since the 1963-1977 and 1979-1996 breaks that occurred in the second half of the 20th century. 

Yes, the Yankees are always in the mix of things, but this year may be the first year in a while that the Yankees don't give the Red Sox or Rays a run for their money. After all, they were still Division Champs from 2000 up until last year, when the Sox dethroned them from that high mantle. 

But this year may be a different story. With the young talent of Evan Longoria and studly pitching from Scott Kazmir, the newly named "Rays" are looking hot and continue to surprise us baseball "predictors." No way, would I have expected the Rays to win the division over the previous year's champions. But predictions are never 100% accurate, rarely even 50% accurate, and TB has shown us a great story. Hopefully they can continue that.

The Yankees, now with a disabled Joba Chamberlain, seem to be flailing in the winds of defeat with a month and a half left in the season. I never really expected the Yanks to go to far. The general management of the organization is nothing compared to Arte Moreno and our beloved Angels. 

Will it be the Angels who dethrone the Yankees? Or is it just a group effort that has done the deed? Whatever the case, the Yanks don't have the help of a Mantle or a Ruth this year and I believe that that just might be what they need to get to the playoffs.

What do you think? Will the Yanks come back next year with a new stadium and a re-energized team or will they continue to disappoint a Steinbrenner family in need of some group therapy?

Baseball Talk All-Star Game Wrap Up

Instant Replay by Christian

Hello everyone, its Christian Hartnett here. So a lot of people have been talking about implementing instant replay in baseball and, frankly, I don't agree one bit. My biggest issue with instant replay is that it will make baseball games even longer than they already are. Almost every game at least one manager comes out to argue a call, sometimes more than one time a game. There would be too many replay requests, and where do you draw the line? Which calls can be reviewed and which can't? There really is no way to determine which plays or calls can be reviewed by instant replay because most of the time the smallest instances decide the outcome of the game. Why should homeruns be replayed and not checked swings? It just wouldn't be fair.

In my mind, the beauty of baseball is its subjective nature. Let me explain. Since baseball relies on the decision of an umpire, it is up to the umpire to DECIDE what HE THINKS happened. Does every play have a definite result? No. Instant replay may show that a player was tagged out before he slid into the base, but if the umpire signals that he is safe, HE IS SAFE. There are no ifs, ands, or buts. That is the way it is. And that is the beauty of baseball.

As an Angels fan, most of my fellow Angel lovers would call me crazy. Remember the call in Game 1 of the ALCS against the White Sox? Remember when we saw that Josh Paul had indeed caught that strike three pitch in the dirt? Remember when umpire Doug Eddings was the most hated man in Orange County? Yes, I do admit to cursing Doug many times for that missed call. But I will not admit to crying out for instant replay in baseball. That play should not have been replayed, Doug just should have made the right call (the right call in MY mind, remember?). But that is the game of baseball, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
